Power flow studies are the backbone of the power system analysis and design. Power system analysis is used for the planning, operation, economic scheduling, exchange of the power between utilities and analyses such as transient stability and contingency plan. However, the power flow computation can be very complicated and time consuming when the system involved is large and related with nonlinear equations. With the use of the software integrated with numerical method, time required to solve the power flow problem is considerably reduced. The PSCAD and MATLAB are the software used for load flow analysis in this project. The theory of the power flow analysis is studied before the power flow systems are designed and simulated by the software. After that, the line flow powers obtained from the software are compared and percentage differences between the data from different software are calculated. Simulations time of the software for all the power flow systems are recorded. From that, the performance of the software will be compared. The analysis of the results showed that percentage differences of the line power flow range from 0% to 0.4216%. The simulation time is from 5.3s to 43.7s and 0.069840s to 0.163626s for PSCAD and MATLAB respectively. The simulation time increase with the increase of the size of the power flow system. The comparison result revealed that both the software performed well in solving the power flow problem.
