Abstract
The major failure mode of a bridge results mainly from excessive local scour around bridge piers. Scour induced bridge failure mode is relatively complex because of the combined ejects of three dimensional river bed degradation, localized scour due to the channel constriction at the bridge opening, local scour around bridge piers and abutments due to the accelerated flow and generation of vortices at the bridge opening, and human interference, such as channel mining near a bridge site, upstream. As a result the equation develops are only suitable for certain condition but not suitable for other condition. It is very important to know the local scour because all the related information and data will be use in design of the bridge. Simon & Senturk (1992) and Kafi & Alam (1995) discuses various scour equation which have been developed in the literature. They found out that the accuracy of laboratory based equation was improved if coefficient and exponent of these equations were derived using field data. Beside that, the equation dependent the factor or flow criteria (flow depth, flow velocity, vortex velocity), shape of the pier and size of sediment. Based on the suggestion by Kafi & Alam (1995), Ab.Ghani & Nalluri (1996) developed a number of new equations to predict pier scour using the available field data. In this study, analysis has been made by using SPSS (Statistical Products and
Services Solutions) software through linear regression method. Outlier's data and the new regression model used to make better predicted on the depth of local scour. From the result, Aminuddin and Nalluri (b) equation given the best predicted value for occurrence scour around bridge piers.
