Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the worldwide top cause of mortality, therefore early diagnosis is vital for effective treatment. However, rural communities lack access to advanced cardiac care facilities, patients have to travel long distances for diagnosis and treatment. This final-year project aims to tackle this problem by designing and implementing a low-cost wireless ambulatory electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring system to improve access to cardiac care in rural communities. This system can provide continuous monitoring of real-time ECG data and heart rates in remote locations. Through an in-depth review of existing ECG monitoring systems, the current landscape of ECG monitoring is understood and gaps are identified in current solutions. The designed system uses affordable components, a straightforward construction procedure, and a simple exquisite prototype design, with an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) on NI LABVIEW for remote access to ECG data. The heart rate data is compared with those on the online heart rate monitor to validate the accuracy and reliability of the ECG system. Data analysis methods are done by using data storage in Excel and data visualization using MATLAB. Performance evaluation was conducted through the implementation of an alarm system for abnormal heart rate detection on the GUI and a user study. The successful implementation of the system allows timely intervention and prevention of CVD, enhancing cardiac care access in remote areas
