A two year rainfall rate and rain attenuation measurement was conducted in Universiti Sains Malaysia. The data searched out are useful to explore the impairment due to rainfall in satellite links operating in tropical and equatorial climates. Rain attenuation is the most important of losses for frequencies above 10GHz, because it can cause the largest attenuation and is usually, so the limiting factor in Ku band and Ka band satellite link design. The cumulative distributions of rain rate and rain attenuation developed from the measured data are presented and compared with those attained with existing prediction models. Existing model for prediction of slant-path have not shown good agreement with available experimental data, validating the need of suitable models for tropical region. Results were analyzed with the purpose of recognize the potentials and the limits of each prediction model. Comparison between predicted and measurement results have shown significant improvements in terms of reduced prediction error over existing models. Study of rain attenuation at Ku-band will be used to estimate the rain attenuation at Ka-band. Therefore, using best predicted to calculate rain attenuation at Ka-band.
