dc.description.abstractPower flow analysis is an important tool used in power system planning, operation, and control. Fast and accurate power flow analysis are crucial to prevent the power system from over-loading and under-loading. Power flow method such as Gauss-Seidel (GS), Newton Raphson (NR) and Fast Decoupled (FD) are introduced to study the behaviour of flow of electric power to evaluate system performance, plan system expansion and optimize system operation. The objectives of this project are to review and analyze existing algorithms for power flow analysis, including their limitations and strengths, and identify areas for improvement, to develop an improved algorithm for power flow analysis that can simulate faster and more accurate and to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm through simulation studies and comparison with existing algorithms. The power flow methods, GS, NR and FD are studied and the number of iterations to converge, time required, and accuracy are recorded. All the methods are applied on IEEE 14, 30, 57 and 118 bus system cited from University of Washington power system test case archive. Two hybrid methods are developed, which are FDNR and GSFD hybrid methods. The proposed algorithm aims to reduce the iteration required for convergence and speed up the convergence time while maintaining the accuracy. The results obtained from the proposed method are compared with the existing methods to check the convergence characteristics and the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. The challenges and limitations of existing and proposed algorithms are discussed, along with future research that may overcome the challenges and improved the algorithms.
