dc.description.abstractPorous asphalt is a surfacing material which is commonly used due to its strength and durability. Many studies have been done to improve the quality of pavement serviceability in other to cater for future traffic demand. Various research have been conducted to identify the characteristics of porous asphalt. In this study, gradation used is identical to the gradation developed in ongoing IRPA Research on double layer porous asphalt. This investigation emphasize on the relationship between layer thickness and binder content of single layer porous asphalt on permeability and indirect tensile strength (ITS). Binder type used is SBS modified bitumen supplied by Shell Malaysia Berhad. The study found out that the permeability coefficient decreases when the layer thickness is increased for the 20 mm maximum size aggregate compared to 14 mm maximum aggregate and 10 mm maximum aggregate. The results showed that the permeability coefficient for 14 mm maximum aggregate and 10 mm maximum aggregate is directly related with the layer thickness. The porosity in the sample studied ranged from 17-20%. From the ITS test, 14 mm maximum aggregate size sample shows higher the horizontal tensile strength when the thickness increased from 40 mm thickness. The indirect tensile strength test result also showed that the 40 mm thickness is the optimum thickness of single porous asphalt.
