Abstract
A study on research trend of palm oil application in high voltage transformer has been conducted to develop new environmental friendly insulating oil for transformer. A few relevant papers concerning palm oil characteristics as insulating fluid show that one product of palm oil which is Refined, Bleached and Deodorized Palm Oil (RBDPO) have the potential to use as insulating fluid in transformer. Most of properties of RBDPO such as turbidity, dielectric breakdown, fire point, flash point, smoke point, relative density, thermal conductivity, and visual examination show good agreement to standard requirement such as ASTM, IEC and BS. RBDPO also has shown the characteristics such as dielectric breakdown, fire point and flash point higher than mineral oil. This study also discovers one of weakness in palm oil which is viscosity. This discovered has yield to a few questions which some of it has an answer from the continuation research of it. The consideration to improve the viscosity in order to achieve the standard limit also has come out with two suggestions. The first one is by mixing the palm oil with soybean oil and second is by collaborated with chemical department. A few suggestions have been given considering the continuation of past research. One of the suggestions is concerning a long term properties of RBDPO such as ageing. It is also included the experimental procedure such as testing on palm oil properties under influence of thermal ageing. In addition, the experimental procedure of electric field strength and partial discharge are also been suggested. The testing is suggested to compare the effect between palm oil and mineral oil.
