Abstract
This study focuses on the field of translation text (tt) editing and assessment, which are two closely interrelated aspects in determining translation quality. Although translation quality has been a recurring issue over the years, no study has been conducted to examine this matter simultaneously from the perspectives of editing and assessment. This study aims to achieve three main objectives: (i) identify how editing is carried out on the translation of a literary text beneath a marble sky, a textbook hbec2803 learning through play, and a handbook guidelines to good practices into malay; (ii) analyse the dimensions of language user and language use that influence the assessment of edited translations; and (iii) explain whether translation briefs are taken into account by editors and evaluators to improve tt quality. A qualitative approach was employed through content analysis, text comparison, and semi-structured interviews of three translated texts of different genres. The data were obtained from the malaysian institute of translation & books, open university malaysia, and the malaysian qualifications agency. The analysis was guided by mossop’s (2020) categories of translation editing, house’s (2015) dimensions, and nord’s (2005) theory of translation briefs. The findings show that the literary text emphasised stylistic editing (44.28%) and the dimension of geographical origin (86.50%), the textbook highlighted structural editing (20.21%) and the dimension of participation (38.60%), while the handbook focused on copyediting (33.05%) with dominance in the dimensions of region (25.40%). In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of editing, assessment, and translation brief in producing quality tts.
