Abstract
5G technology has emerging rapidly and being used in many industries such as medical, military, agriculture and automotive. 5G networks offer faster speed, low latency and higher bandwidth. Microstrip patch antenna have two main disadvantages which are narrow bandwidth and low gain. Narrow bandwidth causes low data rate while low gain resulting the antenna has low efficiency and cannot radiate to a far distance. The objectives of this research are parametric study and optimisation of microstrip single patch antenna and microstrip patch array antenna with dumbbell shape DGS which operates at mmWave frequency band (24GHz) for Massive MIMO. Parametric study is done on microstrip single patch antenna and microstrip patch array antenna to determine the optimum parameter values for optimization and the main parameters that impact the performance of both antennas. The main parameters that impact the performance of microstrip single patch antenna and microstrip patch array antenna are inset depth and microstrip feedline length respectively. The optimized microstrip patch array antenna has resonant frequency of 24.22 GHz. The return loss, directivity and gain has improved by 23.95 dB (94.14%), 3.01 dBi (51.63%) and 2.99 dBi (52.46%) respectively. The objectives of this research are achieved. Microstrip patch array antenna has shown better performance than microstrip single patch antenna.
