dc.description.abstractINTRODUCTION: Extremely preterm infants were among heavily transfused patients. However, lots of controversies involved in neonatal transfusion which include guidelines for transfusion in prematurity, indications of transfusion, risks and benefits of red blood cells transfusion. Studies on neonatal populations showed that there were associations between red blood cells (RBC) transfusion and increased risk of morbidities and mortality. This study was to determine the impact of RBC transfusion with clinical outcomes in extremely preterm infants. METHODOLOGY: A total of 97 neonates medical record between January 2014 to June 2017 had been retrieved. Data on transfusion history and clinical outcomes of these neonates following RBC transfusion were recorded and their associations were determined. RESULTS: The mortality rate of extremely preterm infants in Hospital USM was 17.5%. Multiple logistic regression showed association between in-hospital mortality and frequency of transfusion within 60 days (OR: 0.993; 95% Confidence Interval: 0.990-0.997; p-value: 0.005) and birth weight (OR: 0.995; 95% Confidence Interval: 0.991-0.999; p- value: 0.005). CONCLUSION: The frequency of transfusion within 60 days and birth weight were significantly associated with in-hospital mortality among extremely preterm infant in Hospital USM.
