The main objective of this project is to determine the relationship between dry density of the soil sample and JKR Probe readings. In Malaysia, it is common that JKR Probe is used to estimate the stiffness of the soil in construction sites. Once the relationship has been identified, a fast and simple alternative to determine dry soil densities would be generated. This study also looks at the changes and behaviours of JKR Probe readings when soil samples are subjected to various energy of compaction. The soil sample is classified according to Unified Soil Classification System. The results indicate that the optimum moisture content corresponding to maximum probe reading does not match the optimum moisture content corresponding to maximum dry density. The difference between the two optimum moisture contents however gets smaller as the compaction energy gets higher. As far as the main objective of predicting field dry density using JKR Probe is concerned, it has not been very successful. The dry densities as predicted using the probe was 20% more than the actual values.
