dc.description.abstract | The main objective of this research is to study and to develop an effective physico chemical treatment system for removing heavy metals and ammonia from semi aerobic landfill leachate in Pulau Burung which is potential to be commercialize. The main process is to remove heavy metals and ammoniacal nitrogen by using two kind of media, i.e., activated carbon and zeolite. Batch studies were conducted to determine the shaking and settling times, shaking speed and the optimum mixture of zeolite and limestone. Adsorption isotherm and the associated kinetics order were also determined. Results showed that the optimum shaking and settling times were 2 hours, respectively. The optimum shaking speed was 350 rpm and the optimum mixture between zeolite and activated carbon was 30 mL of zeolite and 10 mL of activated carbon. The results proved that the mixed media can removed 94.1 % of iron, 95.6 % of zink and 69 % of ammoniacal nitrogen. Freundlich’s isotherm study gave the 1/n and Kf values for iron as 0.6238 and 0.2098 respectively, 0.7008 and 0.1228, respectively for zinc and 1.2641 and 0.0455 respectively for ammonia. Adsorption kinetics experiment showed that it followed the pseudo second order chemical adsorption with R2 values for ammonia, iron and zinc were 0.9520, 0.9957 and 0.9956, respectively. | |
