Abstract
John Stuart Mill (1806–1873) is a prominent political philosopher who has contributed extensively to understanding liberty. One of his notable books is On Liberty in which he argues about the extent a society can exercise its power towards its member. This thesis explores, On Liberty’s applicability in a Malaysian context. This is because the Malaysian government is not exempt from criticism due to its restrictions on various aspects of individual freedom. This thesis is aimed to identify the factors causing individuals or groups within Malaysia’s socially stratified society from exercising their individual freedom. It is also focused on analyzing the mechanism by which the social stratification system impedes the exercise of individual freedom and lastly, it intends to establish the relationship between John Stuart Mill’s concept of individual freedom and the social stratification system in Malaysia.
