Magnetic levitation or maglev is a method to suspend metal object without any support but only magnetic field. It has been widely used in manufacturing field. In more advance stage, maglev has been used for highspeed trains or bullet trains with propulsion. For laboratory experimental investigation, a simple magnet wire is coiled into cylinder shaped steel with current flow will turn the steel into magnetic core. The magnetic core can easily generate magnetic field. In this case, electromagnetism drawbacks such as hysteresis loss, flux leakage, eddy current loss, etc may happen when designing magnetic levitation system. Moreover, there are undesired disturbances such as air current, gravitational force, etc that might affect the result of levitation system. In control system perspective, without any position control circuit, the magnetic core can only attract metal object. So, a study of characteristic of magnetic coil and magnetism with appropriate control system is a mind in system design. The purpose of this project is to develop a platform model of magnetic levitation system with circuit controllers. A closed-loop control system circuit is introduced to stabilize the magnetic levitation system. Infrared phototransistors and infrared emitters are applied in the position control. With these magnetic coil design and control circuits, a stable magnetic levitation system is introduced in this project with straightforward position control technique to levitate the metal object.
