Abstract
The idea of smart cities has been a long discussed by professionals especially in the context of traffic management. Nowadays, the number of vehicles on the road increased exponentially and caused unwanted congestion and accidents especially near traffic lights. The study was done to solve this problem by creating a smart traffic light in simulated environment that has dynamic phase timing based on vehicle density and emergency clearance feature. The simulation was done using SUMO software. The software has great flexibility where it can be manually controlled using python programming to achieve the goals. The simulation has complex decision making and sequencing algorithm for the traffic light network. For the dynamic phase timing, the simulation constantly checks for the number of vehicles on each road to determine the next green phase duration. At any time during simulation, emergency vehicle injected will interrupt the normal cycle. The system prioritizes emergency vehicle and execute emergency clearance feature for smooth travel. After preset time, the system continue to the previous phase and duration where the interruption happened. The number of emergency vehicle going through each lane were recorded by the system and can be seen using the message box. The improved efficiency of the system compared to old traffic light significantly resulted in shorter waiting time of all vehicles and better safety for fast moving emergency vehicles.
