As to achieve the goal of affordable and clean energy for sustainable development, many renewable energy harvest technologies are introduced such as solar and wind power harvest. Pedal power energy harvest is popular among them due to its simplicity. Pedal power is a kind of renewable energy that applying human power to rotary motion. In practice, pedal power is used for transportation, water pumping and for electric generation. In this research, the structure of current existing pedal power energy harvesting is revised and improved based on the following aspect — power transmission system, battery management system, and monitoring & control system. Power transmission system is built by belt-pulley system with a speed ratio of 1:11 between pedal and driven generator. The battery is charged using constant voltage method. The state of charge of battery is measured using combination of open voltage method and coulomb counting. Arduino Mega is used as main microcontroller to monitor and control the system flow. Whereas NodeMCU is used as IoT communication device to transfer data wirelessly. After several performance testing, the output power of the generator is found to be 3.1W at generator speed of 1039 rpm. The developed control and monitoring circuit consumed 0.97W of power during operation. With the aid of IoT device, firebase platform and MIT app inventor, an IoT based monitoring system for the pedal generator is successfully developed.
