China’s frequent stock market crashes have caused significant economic damage, destabilized markets, harmed businesses and resource allocation, and resulted in stakeholder losses. Therefore, mitigating stock price crash risk is crucial. This research examines the role of ESG performance in mitigating future stock price crash risks in China. Grounding on stakeholders’ perspective, this study further researches the most influential driving factor of ESG performance in reducing stock price crash risk in high-pollution and high-regulation firms. A key mechanism behind firm-level stock price crashes is the sudden disclosure of negative information that was previously concealed from the market. As risk-averse investors attempt to search for relevant information to reduce information asymmetry, this research examines investor attention as a moderating variable that strengthen the negative relationship between ESG performance and stock price crash risk.
