Abstract
Background: Sarcopenia is a generalized progressive skeletal muscle disorder that is associated with poorer quality of life, physical impairment and death. Therefore this study is aimed in determining the proportion of sarcopenia and its associated factors in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted from May to July 2021. Convenient sampling were used and subjects were screened in outpatient general medical clinic HUSM. Socio-demographic, comorbidities, nutritional status and physical activity were assessed and recorded. Anthropometric, body composition, hand-grip strength and 5-stand-chair test were measured. Descriptive data were reported as means and standard deviations for normally distributed data and as median for non-normally distributed data. Categorical data were reported in percentages and frequencies. Chi-Square, Independent-T test and Simple Logistic Regression (SLR) tests were used in the univariate analysis, and Multiple Logistic Regression (MLR) test was used to determine the associated factors. Results: Among 241 subjects, 74 (30.7%) subjects has sarcopenia. Advanced age (Crude OR 1.19, 95% CI: 1.12-1.26, p < 0.001), lower BMI (Crude OR 0.66, 95% CI: 0.58-0.74, p <0.001), at risk of malnutrition (Crude OR 3.54, 95% CI: 1.94-6.47, p <0.001), and malnourished (Crude OR 22.04, 95% CI: 4.56-106.42, p <0.001) had significant association with sarcopenia. Every increase year of age has 1.19 likelihood of sarcopenia (AOR 1.19, 95% CI: 1.12-1.27, p <0.001) when nutrition was controlled; whereas 3.46 and 19.91 likelihood of sarcopenia in those at risk of malnutrition (AOR 3.46 95% CI: 1.79-6.69, p < 0.001) and malnourished category (AOR 19.91 95% CI: 3.71-106.73, p < 0.001) respectively when age was controlled. Conclusion: We found 30.7% of our subjects has sarcopenia. Sarcopenia incidence increases in advanced age, those at risk of malnutrition, and malnutrition.
