Abstract
In order to aid in field of animal species research and education, an animal sound recognition system is designed based on the FPGA. The system will be able to determine the animal species. To make sure the system can fully utilize its function, a GUI system need to be developed between the FPGA and the computer. The main purpose of the GUI is for user to view the information on the animal species and select any other function, for example to view the previous animal species information or play back the recorded animal sound. To develop the GUI system, the UART is the first option, since it can transmit the data from FPGA to a computer. However, in this project, the RS 232 is not a suitable method as the laptop does not have a RS 232 port. RS 232 cable can only connect the Altera DE2 board to a desktop computer, which is very inconvenient to carry. Thus, the alternative is to connect the Altera DE2 board to a monitor with a VGA cable. In this case, the monitor acts as a graphical display for the data. The Altera DE 2 board will read and load the image for displaying, and user can select to display which image by using the switch control on the board. Plus, LCD panel on the DE 2 board will show text to inform user about the type of animal species.
