Abstract
Permanent magnet brushless DC (BLDC) motor is frequently used in the industry of electric bicycle. It offers several advantages over traditional brushed DC
motors such as high efficiency, lightweight and low-cost maintenance, making them a preferred choice for modern electric bicycle designs. BLDC motor consists of stator which houses the motor windings made of coils of wire that create a magnetic field when powered, rotor which comprises permanent magnets that respond to the changing magnetic field generated by the stator and hall-effect sensor to facilitate precise control of the motor. The control speed and torque for BLDC motor can be implemented by building motor drive that contains six switch MOSFET inverter, PWM drive and PI controller. The control system into BLDC motor drive is essential for its proper functioning and performance. It enables smooth operation, precise speed and torque control, and efficient utilization of power. The performance of the motor drive for electric bicycle is evaluated and simulated via MATLAB Simulink with different onload torque operations and various reference speeds. As a result, the settings of onload operation with load of 2Nm at 1500rpm reference speed shows the DC source voltage is 138.1V, the phase current is 4.097A and electromagnetic torque is 2.658Nm. Therefore, BLDC motor drive throughout this research is to handle precise speed control, improve reliability and high-density power. As technology continues to advance, BLDC motors are likely to become even more prevalent in various industries
