Abstract
The project “Study of Solid-State Circuit Breakers (SSCBs) for the Advancement of Power Systems” is mainly about upgrading power systems, including power generation, distribution, and residential systems, to become more reliable by implementing high-tech circuit breaker technology. Instead of traditional circuit breakers that use mechanical movement, solid-state circuit breakers, which use electronic components, are widely introduced to the industry. These new breakers offer better control and reliability. By integrating SSCBs into smart power systems, we can monitor our energy usage more accurately and respond faster to any issues. This project presents a study of the core components of SSCBs, focusing on different categories of power semiconductors. Researchers have developed various reliable power semiconductors for switching properties of SSCBs, depending on application requirements. Examples of power semiconductors used include thyristors, IGBTs, JFETs, and MOSFETs. One significant finding from this study is that SSCBs demonstrated a fault response time of 10 microseconds, which is 100 times faster than the 1 millisecond response time of traditional mechanical circuit breakers. At the end of this project, the working, benefits of SSCBs and their response times under fault conditions are summarize and evaluated.
