| dc.description.abstract | Plastics, renowned for their versatility, have become the predominant material for packaging mushroom substrate bags, playing a crucial role in modern mushroom cultivation. Their durability, moisture retention, and cost-effectiveness make them essential for maintaining optimal growing conditions. However, the extensive use of plastics in mushroom cultivation raises significant environmental concerns, as improper disposal—often through incineration—contributes to persistent plastic waste pollution. This issue is further exacerbated by the increasing global demand for mushrooms, which inadvertently amplifies plastic consumption and environmental burden. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a class of biodegradable bacterial polyesters, present a promising sustainable alternative to conventional plastic substrate bags. Notably, PHAs are fully biodegradable and can be synthesized under controlled conditions, such as nitrogen limitation. This study evaluates various PHA types for their suitability as substrate bags in Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushroom) cultivation. | |
