Abstract
The influences of Ground Granulated Blastfurnaced Slag (GGBS) on compressive strength, porosity and permeability of concrete has been investigated. The GGBS was used partly replace the cement by direct replacement method on mass – for – mass basis. Four concrete mixes with GGBS replacement levels of 0%, 20%, 50% and 70% were prepared. A constant water/binder ratio was use for all concrete mixes so as to isolate the effect of GGBS replacement levels. The result generally show that the effect of GGBS is to reduce the early age strength of concrete with higher reduction at higher replacement levels. On the other hand, long term strength is enhanced with the addition of GGBS. The result also show that the inclusion of GGBS increase the early age porosity and permeability of concrete, but reduced the long term porosity and permeability. Hence, the use of GGBS could potentially enhance the strength and durability of concrete.
