Abstract
Cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. It is the most common cause of blindness and visual impairment worldwide and is often associated with ageing (World Health Organization, 2025). This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and awareness of cataract among adults attending clinics at Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM), to determine the association between knowledge and selected socio-demographic factors, and to identify the relationship between knowledge and awareness of cataract. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 240 adult participants attending outpatient clinics at HPUSM. Data were collected using a validated self-administered cataract knowledge and awareness questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test, and Pearson’s correlation test to determine the associations between knowledge and selected socio-demographic factors, as well as the relationship between knowledge and awareness. The mean knowledge score was 7.54±2.545 with 77.9% of participants demonstrating good knowledge of cataract. The mean awareness score was 2.66±0.501 with 67.1% of participants demonstrating good awareness of cataract. A statistically significant moderate positive correlation was found between knowledge and awareness (r = 0.467, p < 0.001). Significant associations were also found between knowledge and age (p< 0.001), educational level (p< 0.001), and monthly income (p<0.001). In conclusion, the findings indicate a generally high level of knowledge and awareness of cataract among adults attending clinics at HPUSM.
