Abstract
Abstract Background: The Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scale is a health-related quality of life questionnaire for patients with nasal obstruction. The aim of this study was to translate and adapt NOSE scale to the Malay version NOSE (M-NOSE) scale and evaluate its validity and reliability. Methods: The NOSE questionnaire was translated into Malay and then back to English. The Cronbach α was used to test internal consistency. Independent t-test and Pearson chi square were used to compare the M-NOSE scores of the 2 groups (63 patients and 63 control group). Psychometric features (reliability, repeatability, validity, responsiveness) were evaluated by test-retest, self-consistency, within-score and inter-score correlation and sensitivity of response between the 2 groups. Results: The overall internal consistency for M-NOSE scale was good with α=0.813. There was significant difference between intervention and control groups for all items and the total score (all p<0.001). There was no significant difference for the test-retest data for each item and showed strong correlation with values of more than 0.70. M-NOSE also has strong correlation with Visual Analog Score (VAS) of nasal obstruction. There was significant difference of pre and postoperative mean for all items and the total score (all p<0.001) with good response sensitivity. Conclusion: M-NOSE scale has good reliability, validity and responsiveness. It is a valid and easy to use instrument for the subjective assessment of nasal obstruction and monitoring of outcome post-surgery.
