dc.description.abstractThe widespread use of petroleum-based packaging materials has resulted in adverse environmental impacts, through widespread plastic waste, microplastic pollution, and high energy consumption. This has prompted the search for alternative biodegradable packaging materials. Starch has emerged as a promising renewable resource for packaging films. However, conventional gelatinization processes requiring temperatures of ≥ 80 °C can compromise thermosensitive additives (e.g., antioxidants and antimicrobials) and often yield films with high water sensitivity and weak mechanical properties. This study develops rice starch-based films through salt-induced gelatinization at room temperature (25 °C) and evaluates their suitability for food packaging applications.
