Abstract
Patient safety is an essential aspect of healthcare services to reduce medical errors and improve quality of care. This study aimed to determine the levels of attitudes and practices toward patient safety, to examine the association between attitudes and practices, and to identify the association between sociodemographic factors and patient safety attitudes and practices among nursing students at the School of Health Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). This quantitative cross-sectional study involved 128 nursing students selected through simple random sampling using a self-administered questionnaire. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 29. The findings showed that 37.5% of respondents had negative attitudes, while 3.9% demonstrated poor patient safety practices. No statistically significant positive association was found between attitudes and practices toward patient safety. Age and current year of study were significantly associated with patient safety practices (p < 0.05), while other factors showed no significant association. In conclusion, patient safety education and clinical supervision should be strengthened to improve nursing students’ attitudes and safe practices.
