This project deals with the development of intelligent system for power factor measurement as well as power factor correction system. Technique used to carry out this operation is based on phase angle measurement. Phase angle based, which involves the use of current and voltage waveforms, is a simple way to determine power factor of a given system without sophisticated equipment. In this project, power factor is measured by using phase sensitive circuit. Voltage, which is proportional to current, is applied to the input of the AND gate. Output of the AND gate is applied to a microcontroller (PIC16F877A). Microcontroller, through proper programming, displays the value of angle and hence power factor. Then, a microcontroller based power factor corrector is used to compensate the power quality of the system for poor power factor load This involves measuring the power factor value from the load using PIC, then using proper algorithm to determine the sufficient switching capacitors in order to compensate the reactive components and thus make the power factor near to unity.
