Abstract
PP/EPDM nanocomposites samples was blended at 50:50 ratios and developed by compounding with and without 5 wt% concentration of Al2O3, TiO2, BN and Organoclay nanofillers. The dielectric constant of each specimen was observed using the Material Analyzer. It was found that, the value of dielectric constant was fairly low at PP/EPDM blend without filler and marginally increases at PP/EPDM blend with Al2O3, TiO2 and BN nanofillers. The compounding of PP/EPDM with Organoclay nanofillers shows, some reduction compared to the virgin PP/EPDM. On the other hand, the result of electric field strength from the breakdown test and Opera-2D’s simulation were evaluated to investigate their relation with the different nanofillers. As a result, the addition of Al2O3 nanofillers into the blend increased thedielectric strength of the composites system compared to others nanofillers. From the average value of electric field strength, it was found that the value of electric field strengths for PP/EPDM/Al2O3, PP/EPDM, PP/EPDM/Organoclay, PP/EPDM/TiO2 and PP/EPDM/BN
were 43.5kV/mm, 41.37 kV/mm, 40.20 kV/mm, 38.09 kV/mm and 34.04 kV/mm respectively. Next, the dispersions of fillers were analyzed and interpreted using the SEM morphology test. It was found that the dispersion pattern of Alumina in PP/EPDM/Al2O3’s specimen is homogenously dispersed. Meanwhile, there was an agglomeration of fillers in the PP/EPDM/BN, PP/EPDM/TiO2 and PP/EPDM/Organoclay’s specimen.
