Abstract
Artemisia amma derived from a heterogeneous seed population obtained from north viet nam, grew well in the local climate but did not produce seeds upon flowering. The plant was successfully propagated using a tissue culture technique. The artemisinin content varied among the plantlets. The plantiets were selected and cloned to give 3 major yielding lines of high, moderate and low artemisinin content. The high yielding plantlets, were found to have a mean artemisinin content of 0.41 % ± 0.02 sd, the moderate yielders, a mean arternisinin content of 0.25 % ± 0.02 sd, whereas the low yielders, a mean artemisinin content of 0.13 % ± 0.03 sd. Low and high yielding plants in the field contained a mean artemisinin content of 0.13 % ± 0.0 l sd and 0.33 % ± 0.01 sd, respectively. A high performance liquid chromatography method with electrochemical detection using a glassy carbon electrode was developed and was found to be sensitive and selective for the detection of artemisinin in plasma. The mean recovery values of arternisinin from the extraction, over a range of 25-800 ng ml-l were 88.86-97.68 % with a coefficient variation of 1.57-9.31 % (n=6). The detection limit was 12.5 ng ml-l for artemisinin at a signal to noise ratio of 5: 1.
