Abstract
Despite the prevalence of images and video in our daily lives, one of the commonly encountered problems is the presence of uneven contrast in such digital media. Some regions of the image experienced overexposure and appeared to be having an excessively high level of brightness while other areas seemed to be in underexposure. Such predicaments are caused by environmental factors and are sometimes inevitable. Fuzzy technique is applied in this study due to its potential and efficiency of representation and processing that mimics human reasoning. A novel enhancement algorithm for colour image and video under non-uniform illumination condition with the use of fuzzy concept is proposed. Implementation of the proposed technique is compared with several existing state-of-the-art enhancement techniques to assess the effectiveness of the algorithm. For performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm, results for both the qualitative and quantitative analysis are shown to support the findings of the study. A key feature of the proposed method is its ability in performing enhancement procedural steps according to the regional exposure of the original image. Results have proven that the proposed algorithm as the most effective approach, as compared with other existing technique in terms of preserving image contrast in colour fidelity under imperfect lighting.
