Abstract
Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred vascular access for patients undergoing hemodialysis due to its long-term patency and lower risk of complications compared to other access types. However, inadequate knowledge, attitude, and practice may lead to complications such as infection, thrombosis, and access failure. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding AVF care among hemodialysis patients at Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM) and to determine the relationship between selected sociodemographic characteristics and KAP levels. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used, and data were collected using a validated questionnaire administered to hemodialysis patients at HPUSM. The results showed that 82.6% of respondents had a good level of knowledge regarding AVF care, 87.0% demonstrated a positive attitude toward AVF care, and 92.8% exhibited good practice in AVF self-care. These findings indicate that most respondents had a satisfactory understanding and awareness of AVF care, with generally positive attitudes and good self-care practices. The study also found significant associations between sociodemographic factors, such as dialysis duration, and knowledge levels (p < 0.05). However, some variables showed no significant association with KAP levels. Hence, ongoing patient education and nursing reinforcement are recommended to sustain these outcomes and further reduce the risk of AVF-related complications.
