| dc.description.abstract | Breast cancer remains a major health concern, and the side effects of chemotherapy have encouraged the search for alternative or complementary treatments from natural sources. Hydrocotyle javanica is a medicinal plant with potential anticancer properties. This study aimed to identify the major phytochemical properties of H. javanica extract using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis, and to evaluate its cytotoxic, combinational, and anti-migration effects on human breast cancer MCF-7 cells. The cytotoxic effects of cisplatin (CIS) and H. javanica, both individually and in combination, were evaluated on MCF-7 cells using in vitro cell viability assays, and IC₅₀ values were determined. The interaction between CIS and H. javanica was analysed to assess potential synergistic effects. Additionally, the anti-migration effects of single and combined treatments were evaluated using a cell migration assay. The FTIR results showed that H. javanica contains bioactive phytochemicals, for instance, terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, and other compounds such as ketones and alkaloids. This study also shows that CIS and H. javanica exhibited cytotoxic effects against MCF-7 cells. Combination treatment with CIS and H. javanica enhanced the inhibitory effect on MCF-7 cell viability, suggesting a synergistic interaction. Furthermore, both single and combination treatments significantly inhibited cell migration. These findings suggest that combining CIS with H. javanica holds potential as a novel therapeutic strategy to enhance breast cancer treatment outcomes. | |
