Abstract
Small and specialized machines have significantly benefited from the development of newly conceived materials such as magnetic, conducting and various new uses. Such materials would allow for high-performance motor construction while reducing the motor's size. Due to their innovative capabilities, these motors are widely used in growing nations’ applications. This thesis focused on designing a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) for small-scale applications using computer aided design Ansys software in 2-D. Also, analytical and numerical approaches are used to study the performance of PMSM for small-scale applications. In addition, various permanent magnet rotor structure types and slots number are also analysed. Those are surface mounted, buried, spoked, and inset. Based on the results, the proposed PMSM design can provide equivalent efficiency to the previous published work of PMSM (84%). However, it comes with a smaller size (inner diameter of stator is 53 mm), lower output power (500 W), lower rated voltage (48 V), higher rated speed (3000 rpm) and 84% reduction in terms of the total losses. The outcome leads to a more compact and lightweight motor, thus offering more advantages regarding installation, space utilization and more small-scale motor applications.
