Abstract
Plant-derived compounds, particularly from Barringtonia racemosa, are explored as alternative medicine due to their pharmacological properties and bioactive compounds. B. racemosa, known as powder puff tree, possesses high phytochemical content with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, emphasizing their potential therapeutic benefits for human health. This study aimed to investigate the toxicity properties, and antimicrobial effects of B. racemosa extract. The B. racemosa leaves were extracted using sonication method. Toxicity properties were tested using brine shrimp lethality assay to calculate its LC50. Finding shows that the LC50 is 1818 μg/mL and can be considered as non-toxic since it was greater than 1000 μg/mL. As for the antimicrobial activity, it was proved by the inhibition zones produced by the bacteria tested, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and E. coli when being tested with different concentration of the extraction. From concentration of 50 to 250 mg/mL, the zones of inhibition of S. aureus, E. coli and P. aeruginosa varies and ranged from 17-30mm, 10-19mm and 12-22mm respectively. As the diverse advantages of B. racemosa were displayed, this study helps us to understand the plant’s potential in pharmaceutical and health-related studies.
