Abstract
Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanorods were grown on two types of substrates (silicon wafer and glass) by chemical bath deposition (CBD) route in an aqueous solution that contained zinc nitrate hexahydrate (Zn(CH3COO)2.2H2O) and hexamethylenetetramine (C6H12N4, HMT). The nature of the substrate was found to have effect on the crystal structure and morphology of the grown ZnO nanorods. The ZnO nanoparticles were deposited on substrate as seed layer to grow ZnO nanorods. The density of ZnO nanorods is higher on seeded substrate if compared to unseeded substrate. Process parameters such as the seed annealed temperature, growth duration, growth temperature and precursor concentration are playing important role on the formation of ZnO nanorods. The diameter of the nanorods is tunable in a broad range from 80nm to 400nm by varying the solution concentration and reaction time. From the X-ray diffraction (XRD), ZnO nanorods are wurtzite crystal structure and grown in the [0001] direction. Microstructure observation by scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that the nanorods grown on bare glass have the most uniform size and coverage density. The optical properties of ZnO nanorods that growth at different concentration was investigate by using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. As the concentration increase the transmittance also increased. The band gap of ZnO nanorods were found fall in the range of 4.26 to 4.29eV. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to obtain the topography view of the substrate and energy dispersion X-ray (EDX) were employed for ZnO characterization.
