This research was carried out tCI determine the level at which the workstations in . government offices meet the ergonomic requirements of office workstation design. This research also examined the effects of the office furniture on the worker's postures. The ergonomic criteria were based on postural, visual and physical arrangement aspects. The -methodology includes using questionnaires, personal interviews and observations carried out in five government offices in Penang. The observation technique was used to determine whether correct working postures were present. The research study found that office workstations (furniture, computer and workspace) in government offices were not conform to ergonomic. Many workers were suffering from cumulative trauma disorders such as low and upper back pain and eyestrain, as a result of bad postures at work. The recommendation was that such non ergonomic furniture should be changed for more ergonomic type furniture. The workers must also be trained on how to maintain good postures at work and to be made aware of the effects of using non ergonomic office furniture. This research showed that ergonomic is an important determinant factor because of the effects of the office furniture, computer and workspace on the worker's health, comfort and efficiencyen_US
