Abstract
This research investigates the relationship between risk factors and contractor's claim in
a 'fast track' project Risk factors which have been identified are based on risks and
responsibilities allocation clauses in a civil engineering standard form of contract
The objective of the study is to determine the relationship between 'fast track' risk
factors and contractor's claim so that the understanding of it can aid in the avoidance of
or mitigating claims by effective risk management and construction management from
the early stage of the project.
The perception that led to this study, is that when risk management is not adopted from
the early stage of a project, the contractor who deliberately or otherwise underestimated
the risks is most likely to get the work. When the effect of the risks increases he must
then successfully claim compensation from the client or suffer the loss. This increases
the incidence of claims problem and is especially so with 'fast1rack' projects as they are
affected by all the risks commonly inherent in normal projects but at a greater impact.
The need to identifY risks as early as possible in a project's life is not only for project
constraints and cost to be ascertained, but also to focus project management towards risk
controlling and allocating methods so that claims can be mitigated.
