Abstract
The concept of Sustainable Development has been proposed as a solution to
the environment challenges that we face. A concern for biodiversity loss has lead the
United Nations to declare 2011-2020 as the Decade on Biodiversity. Within this
Decade on Biodiversity, educational institutions are expected to play a critical role to
educate their students for a better understanding in biodiversity. According to the
United Nations, the ultimate aim of the Decade on Biodiversity is to ensure the
integration of biodiversity considerations into work related to the core issues of
sustainable development. Clear goals and an intensive program should be carried out
to increase the shortage of skilled teachers in integrating ESD. In order to ensure the
successful integration of ESD in biodiversity education, teachers should have
adequate knowledge, attitude, skills, values and intention to integrate it into their
teaching. The Decade of Education for Sustainable Development is also nearing the
end (2005-2014). Enhancing adequate teaching skills, knowledge, attitude, values
and intention to integrate ESD is thus a challenge to take up immediately. This study
is a quasi experiment to enhance the knowledge, attitude, skills, values and intention
to integrate ESD in teaching among pre-service teachers. One training workshop was
conducted to facilitate pre-service teachers to integrate ESD in their teaching. The
instruments to check their knowledge, attitude, skills, values and intention are
questionnaire, interview session and lesson plan to integrate ESD. The findings
revealed that overall knowledge, attitude, skills to integrate ESD significantly
different from control group which did not undergo training workshop. They are
xvii
expected to be able to provide proper guidance to their pupils about ESD when they
become teachers. While for values and intention to integrate ESD shows the result is
not significantly different. Therefore, training workshop suggested may be effective
to enhance student teachers professional development and further research should be
done to enhance the values and intention to integrate ESD. There is a need also to
ensure student teachers practice their skills when they start teaching. Future studies
directed towards identifying student teachers’ sustained effort in integrating ESD are
necessary to ensure the goal of DESD achieved.
