Abstract
The objectives of this research were to investigate the potential of modified chitosan as an ion selective membrane in the construction Chloride-ion selective electrode. The constructed electrodes were introduced into 2 different solutions, KCl 2.5 M and FeCl3 2.5 M. The experiments were carried out as a function of % membrane composition, pH, and selectivity of electrodes. The optimum pH for chitosan-Cl- and chitosan-Fe3+ membrane electrodes each was 6.5 ± 1.0 and 5.0 ± 1.0 in the concentration ranges of 1.0 X 10-4 M of Cl- solution. Both proposed electrodes had good selectivity towards Cl- ions, with selectivity coefficients, KPotBA, less than 1.0. The optimum membranes composition for chitosan-Cl- membrane electrode were in the % ratio of 60:40 (chitosan:PVC) while 20:80 (chitosan:PVC) for chitosan-Fe3+ membrane electrode. Results showed addition of plasticizer (DOPP) and chitosan increased the Nernstian slope value, from -44.8 mV dec-1 to -51.9 mV dec-1 for chitosan-Cl- membrane electrode, while for chitosan-Fe3+, from -50.4 mV dec-1 to -58.1 mV dec-1. The % recovery of Cl- ion in 5 samples, tap water, mineral water (Spritzer), seawater, and 2 drinking products (Orange and soybean rose) using both chitosan-Cl- and chitosan-Fe3+ membrane electrodes were ≥ 84.7 % dan ≥ 90.7 % respectively. The performances of both electrodes showed insignificant difference with commercial electrodes and Argentometric method in determination of Cl- ion, with the chitosan-Fe3+ membrane electrode had better performance compared to chitosan- Cl- membrane electrode due to better Nernstian slope value, the detection of limit, and stability during the measurements.
