Abstract
Metaphorical thinking and metaphors are now becoming a popular topic in the discipline of cognitive science. Metaphors and related topics are discussed in the field of linguistics, psychology, computer science and education. In this paper, what is a metaphor and metaphorical thinking are explained in relation to past research in this area. However Hermeneutics approach is used in this research to get a better understanding of the essays. Types of essay which contains metaphor, types of metaphor, the intention of the writer accordingly regarding certain issues, ideas and so forth are investigated. The central problem of Hermeneutics is that of interpretation. The interpretation of metaphor pave the way to understand the writer's intention and opinion regarding certain issues. The understanding of metaphor can serve as a guide to the understanding of students essays .. Understanding of the text also provides the key to understand metaphor. Elements such as motivation, emotion, experience and culture helps a person to build metaphors and perceives its meaning. Metaphoric competency shows various characteristics of a person such as level of thinking and this information will be useful for teachers to understand their students better. Through Hermeneutic analysis, ontological metaphors contributes multi-language functioning of human understanding. From this research, it is found that the understanding of the work as a whole gives the key to understand metaphor or in another word, metaphor is the microtext and the text as macrometaphor. Metaphors that is brought in the classroom will help the students educationally. This is because metaphors can instill values that will be supportive of notions of lifelong learning. Understanding and controlling their own learning process will give students power over their fates immediate and long term.
