The construction industry has been a traditional stronghold of small business particularly family type contracting firms. Numerous disadvantages are associated with family type contracting firms, including informal organization, nepotism, family disputes, paternalistic and autocratic management style, financial problems and succession challenges. These problems and how they are handled often spell the difference between success and failure. In order to maintain the competitive edge and survive in the industry, attempt to professionalise family type contracting firm's current management team is inevitable. A research based on questionnaire and case study has been conducted with the aim to explore under which conditions can professional knowledge and values be integrated successfully into the organization and management of a family type contracting firm. Analysis has revealed that the most effective approach to professionalise the family owned contracting firm is through professionalise the members of the owning family and bring in outside professional management talent into the current management team. On the other hand, major resisting factors to the integration of professional management of a family type contracting firm are paternalistic and autocratic management style in family firm prevent introduction of new values and concepts and misconception of family type contracting firm as nepotism and slow growth fear away professional managers.en_US
