Abstract
This study indeed is trying to examine how far the relationship between mass
media and religion in Indonesia with Republika newspaper as a case. In Indonesia,
most of the mainstream newspapers can't be detached historically from religious
aspect. Republika was first published by the Indonesian Associatiorf for Moslem
Scholars (ICMI - lkatan Cendikiawan Muslim se-Indonesia) which politically
emerged as the awakening of Islamic movement that had been marginalized for the
last two decades under new order's regime. By choosing molluca's conflict or riots
case, this study tries to figure out the interplay between newspaper and religion
through questioning upon reporting pattern and tendency in covering both conflicting
parties i.e. Moslem and Christian.
This study uses the political economy and cultural approach as the theoretical
framework as an effort to answer the proposed-problems. Discourse analysis and
content analysis are utilized as the methodology which discourse analysis reflects the
qualitative approach and content analysis means quantitative. This two different
approach is intentionally used by the researcher as an effort to answer the proposedproblems
comprehensively and holistically. Still, the discourse analysts is more
ยท focused as the main method whereas the quantitative content analysis is only used for
supporting what have been already found through discourse analysis beside for
figuring out the existing pattern and degree in the reporting.
After elaborating the social, economy, political background and the history of
religious interaction in Indonesia generally and Molluca specifically, then, this study
also elaborates press history and profile and control towards Republika. By using the
discourse analysis and content analysis in examining the news stories and editorial,
this study finds that Republika tends to support the Islamic ideology and its group,
where the subject of the riot or conflict has never been associated and referred to the
Islamic group or side instead the subject of riots tends to be anonym, non-religious
identity, military and Christian side. The death or wounded victims from the Moslem
side are covered or reported significantly compared to the other victims, while the
victims from the Christian side are almost never covered or reported. More than that,
the death and wounded victims from Moslem side are usually expressed with regret
and blame the attackers. This tendency of reporting to Islamic side is also emphasized
by the news sources from Moslem scholars and activists that dominantly referred by
Republika. In slandering to the subject of the riot or conflict, Republika carefully does
it and seldom to relate it to the religious identity, as Republika does not reveal the true
identity of the attackers (to the Moslem side) or the subject who did the destructive
acts.
