dc.description.abstractDefects on many historical buildings in Malaysia is a serious problem and need to be overcome quickly. Issues and problems related to building defects may indirectly ruin the originality of the architectural design and materials of the historical buildings on the long run. To the present, various parties has carried out work on conserving historical buildings through a variety of approaches like preservation, prevention, consolidation, rehabilitation, reconstruction and others. However, some conservation practice carried out at the project site does not meet the principle, philosophy and conservation ethics required. Thus, field research on historical buildings is carried out to get an early view on the condition of the historical buildings through surveys on predetermined sites. Study on 50 historical buildings has been carried out to identify general defects found on historical buildings. Finally, case study on 4 project sites has been carried out to assess the level of preparation method statement of the conservation work provided by the contractor and building conservation consultant. At the same time, it is also to identify the weakness and deficiencies that lies therein. The findings of this research is to propose a few conservation methods that are more effective to remedy the defects found on historical buildings to ensure historical buildings in Malaysia is well conserved for a longer period of timeen_US
