Abstract
This study was conducted to study the effect of hydraulic performance of two improved
gully grate of a Malaysian drain. Site location of study is located at the Bandar Baharu,
Kedah. The shape of the gullies inlet is usually rectangular and it helps convey water
ponding on the pavement surface to the inlet system; hence a proper and adequate design
is necessary to reduce the stagnant water on the pavement surface. The objective of this
study is to propose 2 multiple improved design of gully grates. Next is to determine the
hydraulic performance of the proposed grate design with different cross slope under
different flow conditions in terms of water depth, velocity and their efficient. Therefore,
a half scale physical model with series of grate comprising of a testing platform with an
inlet tank and an outlet tank on both end of the platform has been designed and
constructed to reflect the hydraulic interaction of the gully inlets and the designed
catchment area. In this study, intermediate system that permits the approaching flow to
pass through the gully downstream was used. The results obtained from the tests are
presented in the form of water depth, velocity and efficiency of the grates were
established.
