Abstract
In digital communication world, a noncoherent receiver is the receiver type that can demodulate a transmitted signal without needing the prior carrier phase information from the transmitter. This characteristic helps in lowering the complexity and the cost of the receiver architecture but will affect the performance accuracy. There are various applications that utilise the noncoherent receiver design such as sensor networks and shortrange interconnects that require for low power and low complexity receiver. One of the cheapest modulation schemes for noncoherent system is the ASK modulation scheme which is easy to be implemented and less complex. The objectives of this project are to study and design a noncoherent ASK receiver circuit for a bandpass wireless communication system and developed a software simulation to analyse the BER performance of the designed receiver circuit. Firstly, all concepts related to the noncoherent ASK receiver are studied. Next, the receiver circuit design is divided into parts. Each part is designed and tested for output before combined into a complete receiver. After that, the designed receiver will undergo a software simulation of a bandpass wireless communication system with the insertion of AWGN channel to test and analyse the receiver circuit for BER performance evaluation. Results shows that the designed receiver has a better BER performance as compare to the theoretical value. Discussion and analysis are made.
