Abstract
The objective of this study is to determine the effect of heat treatment on rattan manau (Calamus manan) and the effectiveness of oil bath heat treatment on physical, mechanical properties and natural durability. The heat treatment process used a combination of temperature, time of treatment and rattan position as parameters. Temperature of 80oC, 100oC and 120oC, time of treatment 10 minutes, 20 minutes and 30 minutes and basal (25% height), middle (50% height), top position (75% height) of rattan were used. Physical properties were effected by position, temperature and time of treatment. The percentage of moisture content decreased with heat treatment progressively with increase of temperature and time of treatment. There is a small increase in value of specific gravity due to oil adsorption during treatment. There is also an increase in dimensional stability of rattan Calamus manan with heat treatment due to decrease in hygrocopicity properties. Heat treated samples showed an increase in modulus elasticity, a decrease in modulus rupture, shear and compression properties. Application of heat treatment at 100oC temperature and above enhanced durability against termites and soft rots. An increased in temperature decreased the percentage of weight loss and attack againts termite. Time of treatment did not show any particular pattern and there is no significant different in durability properties. Application of heat treatment using oil palm show that it has a low colour stability and cannot prevent discoloration due to natural weathering.
