dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to find out if the public speaking programme can improve students’ motivation to speak and to investigate if the public speaking programme can enhance students’ fluency in speaking skills. This study is a case study research, employing qualitative design. 3 students were selected through purposive sampling as the subjects for this research study. The target level of students for this study is the beginner, intermediate and advanced English Language proficiency level tertiary students. The data of this study was collected by conducting in-depth interviews, observation checklists, evaluation forms, timer reports and ah-counter reports. Descriptive analysis was used to analyse the evaluation forms, interviews and observations, while the quantitative data collected was analysed using mean to calculate the average speech rate, using frequency to calculate the numbers of fillers and using the percentage change to calculate the progress of the subjects in terms of fillers and speech rate. The results revealed that the participant with the lowest English proficiency portrayed the greatest progression for both motivation level and fluency in English from this public speaking programme. On the other hand, the student with advanced English proficiency was inspired to try out new speaking activities and had learnt to control her speech rate within the suggested range. Besides, presentations had become more relaxed and exciting for the students. The Public Speaking Programme also had helped the students to overcome their nervousness to speak in English in front of others. The students are now more eager and looking forward to do her public speaking speeches. The study also found that through the Public Speaking Programme, students were more willing to share their ideas in front of people. | en_US |
