Abstract
The challenges in designing RF front end blocks for IoT are in designing low phase noise and low power consumption circuits. The performances of all blocks in the transceiver have to be increased in order to tackle this challenge. The voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is one of the vital blocks in determining the RF transceiver performance. Therefore, in this project, the emphasis will be on the low power consumption and low phase noise VCO. In this project, a 0.13-μm current reuse class-C VCO has been implemented for 2.45GHz Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Pre- and post-layout simulation are using the Cadence Spectre-RF and Mentor’s Calibre, respectively. From the results obtained, current reuse CMOS LC-tank VCO was implemented in order to achieve low power consumption but able to display at par phase noise performance as the typical LC-tank VCO. The power consumption is 2.0432mW and its phase noise is -122.4dBc/Hz@1MHz. The figure of merit for this VCO is –187.077 dBc/Hz. The performance achieved by the current reuse class-C VCO was compared with state of the art work by others. This VCO can be said as better in term of phase noise and power consumption. However it was considered as moderate in term of figure of merit.
