| dc.description.abstract | This research looks at the Black Metal music phenomenon through coverage given in Berita Harlan and The Star for the month of July and August 2001; when the issue was widely discussed. This issue was raised in order to create an environment of moral panics- a phenomenon that is said to be threatening the 'local value' system- in a period of the hegemonic crisis of the dominant class since 1997. The coverage given to this issue was seen as a practice to regain the political and cultural hegemonic stability of the dominant class. This research focuses on the way ethnic based newspapers portray Black Metal news because this issue is very much linked with Malay ethnic youth and Islam. This is so that comparison can be done. Besides that, this research also looks at the connection between newspapers and the ruling elites, by looking at the portrayed news that includes the ruling elites. The results of this study suggests that there's a close relationship between the ruling elites and newspapers through the high percentage of coverage given, where theruling elites used this exposure to stress that Black Metal music has negative elements. | en_US |
